ADAM
First and Second - Sinner and Redeemer
As Revealed in the Holy Scriptures
by Gene Nanton
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our
likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl
of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping
thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 1:26
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis
2:7
And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the
field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam
to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam
called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam
gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the
field. Genesis 2:19-20
But for Adam there was
not found an help meet for him. Genesis 2: 20
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam
and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead
thereof; and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman,
and brought her unto the man. Genesis 2:21-22
And Adam said, This is
now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because
she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother,
and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:
23-24
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not
ashamed. Genesis 2: 25
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God
created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:27
And blessed them, and called their name Adam,
in the day when they were created. Genesis 5:2
And God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and
replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea,
and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the
earth. Genesis 1:28
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden. Genesis
2:8
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree
that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the
midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Genesis
2:8-9
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of
Eden to dress it and to keep it. Genesis 2:15
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing
seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is
the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. Genesis
1:29
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of
the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou
shalt surely die. Genesis 2:16-17
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth
know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye
shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3: 4-5
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and
that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she
took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her;
and he did eat. Genesis 3:6
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that
they were naked. Genesis 3:7
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast
done this . . . I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy
seed and her seed. Genesis 3: 14,15
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the
garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and
his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of
the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam,
and said unto him, Where art thou? Genesis 3:8-9
Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and
hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of
it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the
days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and
thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat
bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust
thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Genesis 3: 17-19.
Unto Adam also and to his
wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. Genesis 3:
21
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of
Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and
he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which
turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. Genesis 3: 22-24
This is the book of the generations of Adam.
. . . And Adam lived an hundred
and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and
called his name Seth. And the days of Adam
after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and
daughters: And all the days that Adam lived
were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. Genesis 5:1, 3-5
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam
to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. Romans 5:14
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life. John 3:16
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be
tempted of the devil. And when the tempter came to him . . . Jesus said unto
him, IT IS WRITTEN . . . Then the devil leaveth him, and behold angels came and
ministered unto him. Matthew 4:1,3,7,11
For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he
took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be
made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high
priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the
people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to
succour them that are tempted. Hebrew 2:16-18
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and
blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same: that through death he
might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. Hebrew
2:14
And so it is written, The first man Adam
was made a living soul; the last Adam was
made a quickening spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:45
For as in Adam all die,
even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:22
Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of
this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all
men unto me. This he said, signifying what
death he should die. John 12:30-33
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this
the judgment, so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them
that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. Ephesians 9:27-28
And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the
daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion;
the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem. Micah 4:8
I know that ye seek Jesus which was crucified. He is not
here, HE IS RISEN. Matthew 28:6
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed . . . from
your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the
precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: who
verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in
these last times for you. 1 Peter 1:18-20
And washed us from our sins in His own blood, and hath made
us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion for
ever and ever. Revelation 1:5, 6.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith. . .
To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the
midst of the paradise of God. Revelation 2:7
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep
the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Revelation 14:12
Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye
blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world: Matthew 25:34
ADAM
First and Second - Sinner and Redeemer
Annotated re: Spirit of Prophecy
by Ellen G. White
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our
likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl
of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping
thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 1:26
- Man was formed in the likeness of God. His nature was in harmony with the
will of God. His mind was capable of comprehending divine things. His
affections were pure; his appetites and passions were under the control of
reason . . . . As man came forth from the hand of his Creator, he was of lofty
stature and perfect symmetry. His countenance bore the ruddy tint of health
and glowed with the light of life and joy. Adam's height was much greater than
that of men who now inhabit the earth. Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 45,
Ellen G. White
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis
2:7
- God made Adam after His own character, pure and upright. There were no
corrupt principles in the first Adam, no corrupt propensities or tendencies to
evil. Adam was as faultless as the angels before God's throne. SDA Bible
Commentary Vol. 1, p. 1035. Ellen G. White
- Adam was crowned king in Eden. To him was given dominion over every living
thing that God had created . . . He made Adam the rightful sovereign over all
the works of His hands. God's Amazing Grace, p. 40, Ellen G. White
- With every living creature, from the mighty leviathan that playeth among the
waters to the insect mote that floats in the sunbeam, Adam was familiar. He
had given to each its name, and he was acquainted with the nature and habits
of all. God's glory in the heavens, the innumerable worlds in their orderly
revolutions, "the balancings of the clouds," the mysteries of light
and sound, of day and night--all were open to the study of our first parents. Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 50-51, Ellen G. White
Genesis 2:
23-24
- Eve was created from a rib taken from the side of Adam, signifying that she
was not to control him as the head, nor to be trampled under his feet as an
inferior, but to stand by his side as an equal, to be loved and protected by
him. A part of man, bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh, she was his
second self, showing the close union and the affectionate attachment that
should exist in this relationship. "For no man ever yet hated his own
flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it." Ephesians 5:29. Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 46, Ellen G. White
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not
ashamed. Genesis 2: 25
- The sinless pair wore no artificial garments; they were clothed with a
covering of light and glory, such as the angels wear. So long as they lived in
obedience to God, this robe of light continued to enshroud them. Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 45, Ellen G. White
- The holy pair were students receiving instruction from the all-wise Creator.
They were visited by angels, and were granted communion with their Maker, with
no obscuring veil between. They were full of the vigor imparted by the tree of
life, and their intellectual power was but little less than that of the
angels. The mysteries of the visible universe--"the wondrous works of Him
which is perfect in knowledge" (Job 37:16)--afforded them an exhaustless
source of instruction and delight. The laws and operations of nature, which
have engaged men's study for six thousand years, were opened to their minds by
the infinite Framer and Upholder of all. They held converse with leaf and
flower and tree, gathering from each the secrets of its life. Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 50-51, Ellen G. White
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden. Genesis
2:8
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree
that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the
midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Genesis
2:8-9
- Adam and Eve had free access to the tree of life. No taint of sin or shadow
of death marred the fair creation. Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 47, Ellen G.
White
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of
Eden to dress it and to keep it. Genesis 2:15
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing
seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is
the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. Genesis
1:29
- The wonderful provision made for man in Eden was made by a God who loved
him. Everything in nature was pure and undefiled. Fruits, flowers and
beautiful, lofty trees flourished in the Garden of Eden. With every needed
blessing, Adam and Eve were abundantly supplied. Not a shadow interposed
between them and their Creator. They knew God as their beneficent Father, and
in all things their will was conformed to the Will of God. God's character was
reflected in the character of Adam. His glory was revealed in every object of
Nature. The invisible things of God were clearly seen, being understood by the
things that were made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Article: The
Second Adam, Ellen G. White, June 2, 1898.
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of
the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou
shalt surely die. Genesis 2:16-17
- Our first parents, though created innocent and holy, were not placed beyond
the possibility of wrongdoing. God made them free moral agents with full
liberty to yield or to withhold obedience. They were to enjoy communion with
God and with holy angels; but before they could be rendered eternally secure,
their loyalty must be tested. The tree of knowledge, which stood near the tree
of life in the midst of the garden, was to be a test of the obedience, faith,
and love of our parents. Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 48-9, Ellen G. White
- This was the smallest test that God could devise to prove the obedience of
our first parents; but Eve fell under the temptation. The Second Adam,
Ellen G. White, June 2, 1898.
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth
know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye
shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3: 4-5
- But Satan came to the dwellers in Eden, and insinuated doubts of God's
wisdom. He accused Him, their Heavenly Father and Sovereign, of selfishness,
because, to test their loyalty, he had prohibited them from eating of the tree
of knowledge. The Second Adam, Ellen G. White, June 2, 1898.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and
that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she
took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her;
and he did eat. Genesis 3:6
- Adam accepted the forbidden fruit from the hand of his wife; and by this act
the flood gates of woe were opened to our world. Adam was endowed with a
nature pure and sinless, but he fell because he listened to the suggestions of
the enemy. His posterity became depraved; by one man's disobedience many were
made sinners. The Second Adam, Ellen G. White, June 2, 1898.
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that
they were naked. Genesis 3:7
- If Adam and Eve had never touched the forbidden tree, the Lord would have
imparted to them knowledge – knowledge upon which rested no curse of sin,
knowledge that would have brought them everlasting joy. The only knowledge
they gained by their disobedience was a knowledge of sin and its results. SDA
Bible Commentary Vol. 1, p. 1083. Ellen G. White
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast
done this . . . I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy
seed and her seed. Genesis 3: 14,15
- God declares: "I will put enmity." When man transgressed the
divine law, his nature became evil, and he was in harmony, and not at
variance, with Satan. There exists naturally no enmity between sinful man and
the originator of sin. Had not God specially interposed, Satan and man would
have entered into an alliance against Heaven; and instead of cherishing enmity
against Satan, the whole human family would have been united in opposition to
God. The Great Controversy, Ellen G. White, p 505.
- Satan tempted man to sin that he might thus secure co-operation in his
warfare against Heaven. But when Satan heard the declaration that enmity
should exist between himself and the woman, and between his seed and her seed,
he knew that his efforts to deprave human nature would be interrupted; that by
some means man was to be enabled to resist his power. It is the grace that
Christ implants in the soul which creates in man enmity against Satan. Without
this converting grace and renewing power, man would continue the captive of
Satan, a servant ever ready to do his bidding. The Great Controversy,
Ellen G. White, p 506.
- The fall of our first parents broke the golden chain of implicit obedience
of the human will to the divine. Obedience has no longer been deemed an
absolute necessity. The human agents (men today) follow their own imaginations
which the Lord said of the inhabitants of the old world was evil continually. SDA
Bible Commentary Vol. 1, p. 1083. Ellen G. White
- God had power to hold Adam back from touching the forbidden fruit; but had
He done this, Satan would have been sustained in his charge against God's
arbitrary rule. Man would not have been a free moral agent, but a mere
machine. SDA Bible Commentary Vol. 1, p. 1084. Ellen G. White
- Obedience to all the commandments of God was the condition of eating of the
tree of life. Adam fell by disobedience. Maranatha, p. 325, Ellen G.
White
Unto Adam also and to his
wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. Genesis 3:
21
Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of
Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and
he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which
turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. Genesis 3: 22-24
This is the book of the generations of Adam.
. . And Adam lived an hundred and thirty
years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name
Seth. And the days of Adam after he had
begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: And all
the days that Adam lived were nine hundred
and thirty years: and he died. Genesis 5:1-5
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam
to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's
transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. Romans 5:14
- Christ is called the second Adam. In purity and holiness, connected with God
and beloved by God, He began where the first Adam began. Willingly He passed
over the ground where Adam fell and redeemed Adam's failure. My Life
Today, p. 323, Ellen G. White
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life. John 3:16
- Not only man but the earth had by sin come under the power of the wicked
one, and was to be restored by the plan of redemption. At his creation Adam
was placed in dominion over the earth. But by yielding to temptation, he was
brought under the power of Satan. "Of whom a man is overcome, of the same
is he brought in bondage." 2 Peter 2:19. When man became Satan's captive,
the dominion which he held, passed to his conqueror. Thus Satan became
"the god of this world." 2 Corinthians 4:4. He had usurped that
dominion over the earth which had been originally given to Adam. Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 69, Ellen G. White
- But God gave His own dear Son-- one equal with Himself--to bear the penalty
of transgression, and thus He provided a way by which they might be restored
to His favor, and brought back to their Eden home. Christ undertook to redeem
man and to rescue the world from the grasp of Satan. Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 69, Ellen G. White
- Christ was tempted by Satan in a hundredfold severer manner than was Adam,
and under circumstances in every way more trying. The deceiver presented
himself as an angel of light, but Christ withstood his temptations. He
redeemed Adam's disgraceful fall, and saved the world. He lived the law of God
and honored it in a world of transgression, revealing to the heavenly
universe, to Satan, and to all the fallen sons and daughters of Adam that
through his grace humanity can keep the law of God. God's Amazing Grace,
p. 42, Ellen G. White
- Jesus gained the victory through submission and faith in God, and by the
apostle He says to us, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the
devil and he will flee from you." (James 4:7-8). We cannot save ourselves
from the tempter's power; he has conquered humanity, but "the name of the
Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." (Prov.
18:10). God's Amazing Grace, p. 41. Ellen G. White
- The Son of God, heaven's glorious Commander, was touched with pity for the
fallen race. His heart was moved with infinite compassion as the woes of the
lost world rose up before Him. But divine love had conceived a plan whereby
man might be redeemed. The broken law of God demanded the life of the sinner.
In all the universe there was but one who could, in behalf of man, satisfy its
claims. Since the divine law is as sacred as God Himself, only one equal with
God could make atonement for its transgression. None but Christ could redeem
fallen man from the curse of the law and bring him again into harmony with
Heaven. Christ would take upon Himself the guilt and shame of sin--sin so
offensive to a holy God that it must separate the Father and His Son. Christ
would reach to the depths of misery to rescue the ruined race. Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 64, Ellen G. White
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and
blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same: that through death he
might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. Hebrew
2:14
- With his human arm, Christ encircled the race, while with his divine arm, he
grasped the throne of the Infinite, uniting finite man with the infinite God.
He bridged the gulf that sin had made and connected earth with heaven. The
Second Adam, Ellen G. White, June 2, 1898.
And so it is written, The first man Adam
was made a living soul; the last Adam was
made a quickening spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:45
- Christ's victory was as complete as had been Adam's failure. So we may
resist temptation, and force Satan to depart from us. God's Amazing
Grace, p. 42, Ellen G. White
- When he (Satan) tempted and overcame Adam and Eve, he thought that he had
gained possession of this world; "because," said he, "they have
chosen me as their ruler." He claimed that it was impossible that
forgiveness should be granted to the sinner (Adam), and therefore the fallen
race were his rightful subjects, and the world was his. Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 69, Ellen G. White
- But Christ, by His sacrifice paying the penalty of sin, would not only
redeem man, but recover the dominion which he had forfeited. All that was lost
by the first Adam will be restored by the second. Patriarchs and Prophets,
p. 68, Ellen G. White
And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the
daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion;
the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
- The victory was gained. Christ had redeemed Adam's disgraceful failure and
fall and had placed man on vantage ground. Tempted in All Points,
E.G. White, Signs of The Times,7/23/1900
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith . . .
To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the
midst of the paradise of God. Revelation 2:7
- Obedience through Jesus Christ gives to man perfection of character and a
right to the tree of life. The conditions of again partaking of the fruit of
the tree are plainly stated in the testimony of Jesus Christ to John: "
Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they might have right to the
tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." Marantha,
p. 325, Ellen G. White.
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep
the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Revelation 14:12
- The redeemed saints, who have loved God and kept His commandments here, will
enter in through the gates of the city, and have right to the tree of life.
They will eat freely of it as our first parents did before their fall. The
leaves of that immortal widespread tree will be for the healing of the
nations. All their woes will then be gone. Sickness, sorrow and death they
will never again feel, for the leaves of the tree of life have healed them.
Jesus will then see of the travail of His soul and be satisfied, when the
redeemed are gathered around that tree of life to eat of its immortal fruit. Maranatha,
p. 325, Ellen G. White.
Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye
blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world: Matthew 25:34
- Before the ransomed throng is the Holy City. Jesus opens wide the pearly
gates, and the nations that have kept the truth enter in. There they behold
the Paradise of God, the home of Adam in his innocency. Then that voice,
richer than any music that ever fell on mortal ear, is heard, saying:
"Your conflict is ended."
- Now is fulfilled the Saviour's prayer for His disciples: "I will that
they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am."
"Faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy"
(Jude 24), Christ presents to the Father the purchase of His blood, declaring:
"Here am I, and the children whom Thou hast given Me." "Those
that Thou gavest Me I have kept." Oh, the wonders of redeeming love! the
rapture of that hour when the infinite Father, looking upon the ransomed,
shall behold His image, sin's discord banished, its blight removed, and the
human once more in harmony with the divine!
